In C line s Death on the Installment Plan Scornful Young Ferdinand scornful young lugs readers along on the series of farcical misadventures also known as his childhood We encounter monstrously preposterous characters and stories with varying imensions of outlandish implausibility And through it all we end up sympathizing completely with his BWWM (Interracial African American Billionaire Short Stories) disgust contempt frustration and underlyingisappointment For although Ferdinand is emphatically vitriolic bitter pessimistic and snide he is also scathingly irresistibly funny And it is for Ferdinand s violently colorful personality than for the story itself that I found this book so engaging This is not to say the plot is insignificant far from it Many of his tall tales are "Delightfully Exuberant They Cannot Sit "exuberant They cannot sit They suirm and wriggle and smirk But it s Ferdinand s singular voice that s truly unforgettable He has this weird undercurrent of vibrantly angry energy roiling and heaving and occasionally bursting out irrepressibly just beneath his smug sneering I Confessions of a Gay Priest: A Memoir of Sex, Love, Abuse, and Scandal in the Catholic Seminary don t give a shit facade He is viciously unapologetically ALIVE under his brittle show of indifference And though he claims that heoesn t know how to win friends and influence people he certainly won me over Black Love Signs : An Astrological Guide to Passion, Romance and Relationships for African Americans (aka Sexy Black Sun Signs: An Astrological Guide to Love and Romance for African-Americans) during this charming snot fest of a book But it s possible I was just overly impressed by all those gorgeous little insults of his They can all go shit in their hatsThey can rot with leprosy They can stew in a million kettles full of snot and cockroachesI ll stir them myself Let them pickle Let them whirl in gangrene Such aarling way with words Oh and he also has the best Psychology draggingabsolutely bewildered by the intensity of my hatredmy indomitable fury the eternal thirst for vengeance that I harbored in my flanks Overall this was funnierirtier and yet also moving than his popular Journey to the End of the Night If you ve ever enjoyed sitting in Women's Activism and Social Change Rochester New York 1822 1872 dark corners at nauseating parties mocking the blatantisplays of absurdity with a satisfyingly sarcastic friend this may be the book for you It made me want to be a The Western Scar: The Theme of the Been-To in West African Fiction derisive person It put the joy and vitality back into cynicism And most importantly it got me to laugh both at others and at myselfWhat can I say C line is my homeboy Read this and Journey to the End of the Night around the same time so to me it felt like two novels in one as his writing style is pretty much the same in both apart from the odd smallifference Here in Death on Credit we have the obscene and the vulgar infused with the proust esue poetic vision of Journey and I have to say this came close to being as good as Journey but for me Journey is still my favourite Death on Credit takes place earlier in the life of CelineBardamu in which we are taken through flashbacks to his childhood a time when the hell of poverty and Understanding Shutter Speed desperation in the impoverished slums of Paris racked his brain There was a lot to find amusing in this novel however it is still one filled withisaster financial ruin The Mother I Carry: A Memoir of Healing from Emotional Abuse despair and the meddling petit bourgeois C line combines indecent wit unsentimentalepictions of ugly human behavior hallucinations and angry rants The Young Ferdinand is simply one of the great charismatic ratbags of 20th century literature C line hates with the intensity the narrowness and the purity of the Large Hadron Collider s accelerated particles It is not comfortable to encounter this in my old age I was receptive to it in my own Age of Rage though and was well served by reading the bitter and bilious thing thenIf you haven t been here before middle age I wouldn t advise making the trip When we immerse ourselves in a novel the page becomes a kind of looking glass that allows us to step into the fictional space and out of every Anthology of Articles on African Linguistics and Literature day life The words on the page are the alchemy that allows this to happen but only if they are chosen and arranged in a way that appeals to our individual reading tastes If theyon t As soon as things begin to look up a little all people can think of is piggishness Louis Ferdinand C line is a virtuoso of explicit narration a prodigy of grotesue and a czar of cynicism You re working too hard You re a sap You think they appreciate it If you knock yourself out who s going to take care of you Not your boss I bet Buy me a menthe kid I ll sing you The Girl from Mostaganem It ll The Writing Workshop Morte a credito pubblicato nel 1936 è il secondo romanzo i Céline che nelle sue pagine ritorna alla propria infanzia Teendom Raised under the relentlessly critical money obsessed eyes of his paranoid blustering bile filled father and tormented weary and nagging mother Ferdinand uickly evelops a loathing for the parade of hypocrisy vice and work filled chasing to put food on the table and keep the gas lights burning that plays out before his cynical eyes in his bleak Parisian suburb With virtually every soul his parents uppermost consumed by the need to eke out a living by any means and terrified of losing their livelihood whilst striving against nature s lures to portray the model upright and moral petty bourgeois citizen C line s endlessly An Alien Heat disillusioned youthevelops a eep nausea for the bitter games that life plays the way it continually stacks The Odds Against You And Torments With Glimpses Of Freedom odds against you and torments with glimpses of freedom matter how Ferdinand may endeavor to please his uptight anxious parents or miserly skeptical employers the end result is always verbal and phyical blows accompanying the inevitable letdown his actions bring about The following exchange as Ferdinand fresh from school prepares to enter into the world of business as an apprentice is typical of this seesaw affair My father received me with open armsHe gazed at me affectionately I never seen him so movedHis whole moustache was tremblingThat s splendid my boy You ve given us a lot of troubleBut now I congratulate youNow you ll be starting out in lifeThe future lies open before youIf only you take the right coursethe straight and narrowWork hardStruggleI begged his forgiveness for having always been bad I hugged and kissed him with all my heartOnly I stank so bad he began to sniffAh What s this He pushed me away Oh the stinkerthe little pigHe s filled the whole place with shit Ah Cl mence Cl mence For God s sake take him upstairs before I lose my temper He s revolting That was the end of his effusionsUnlike in Journey Death on the Installment Plan with the exception of brief interludes over in England takes place entirely in and around Paris and its environs C line s capital is a city in Rough Rider: BWWM Interracial MC Biker Alpha Male Romance decline filled with vice licentiousness theft and cant populated by hypocrites swindlers prostitutes and pimps Every wretched soul that intrudes upon Ferdinand s youth is a complex amalgamation of unfulfilled perfervidesires and bitter keenly felt pain including the enthusiastic pseudoscientific scamp Courtial Sonic Alchemy: Visionary Music Producers and Their Maverick Recordings des Pereires who rescues the lad when he s at his lowest point In many ways Ferdinand who silently takes most of the abuseumped upon him and as he puts it in the latter stages of the novel has little taste for vengeance is the most standup character in the tale As was the case in Journey Ferdinand although often led astray by his bad judgement and tastes rarely acts in a malicious or irectly harmful manner towards those he encounters on his trouble laden journeys and is capable of a touching amount of loyalty and concern for his various patrons If he had managed to escape the sledgehammer blows of his parents uotidian exasperation and isappointment and the never ending need to be bringing money into the household who knows how he might have turned out It is this touch of sympathy this humanist emotion that underpins all of the bleak savage misogyny which makes C line s tales such a wonderful admixture of the profane and the poetic For all of the hatred and isgust in C line s fictional biographies there is also love and exuberance for the fathomless mysteries in the brief snippets of experience granted to us by lifeAlthough there is a efinite repetitive pattern to Death C line is such a natural storyteller that the entertainment value never flags It s like listening to a colorful wag at a local pub fired up with a Suggestive Inuiry into the Hermetic Mystery with a Dissertation on the More Celebrated of the Alchemical Philosophers Being an Attempt Towards the Recovery of the Ancient Experiment of Nature drink or three spill one hilarious story after another and there is plenty of black comedy in this book The relentless pace of the novel has a feverish feel accompanied by the wild panoramic fantasies that Ferdinand slips into the shimmering grotesueries that unfold before him in lurid neon shades The book is utterly peppered with the threeot punctuation style that he made his own a perfectly realized effort to simulate the abrupt stop and start rhythm of the Parisian ialect Ralph Manheim s translation is flat out superb expertly and easily catching the tone and cadence of C line s verbal stream and ably expressive of the elegance and coarseness that alternate throughout the bookHaving now completed Journey and Death I have become a big fan of C line s the general crumminess of man has no finer etailer than the caustic Frenchman I can see his influence on such later chroniclers as Thomas Pynchon and Joseph Heller the silly names and the Integrating Cleveland Baseball dark humor the frantic pace and frenetic speechifying the madcap pursuits of manic obsessions After a bit of a break to clear the air so to speak I plan on tackling his trilogy of wartime lunacy on the run with Nazis and whores that consists of Castle to Castle North and Rigadoon Once bitten by the C line bug you ll come to need of his bleakly ribald fix What an asshole What a pig What a bigot But jesus can he write This is a good one to pick up and just read passages from anywhere then setown when you just can t take it any. Academic and General Task 2 How to Write at a Band 9 Level different and a littleifficult at first to get used to The only author I can think of who is similar in style is William Burroughs which should come as no real surprise because Celine was one of Burrough s major influences However Celine is coherent and less random than Burroughs making him enjoyable to read A Vietnam vet I know once
